How Much Can You Bench?
Do not be suckered by the question ,"How much can you bench?" Many people take their max bench, add five pounds, and claim that they warm up with that weight... on a slow day of course. Although it's tempting, you may want to restrain from exaggerating that number. Your ego may want to make up a wildly inflated number, but someone will likely ask you for a demonstration, at which point you are screwed. Anyway, how much a person can bench is irrelevant for the purposes of general good health and fitness.
First of all, the point of weight training is to exhaust every last fiber of a muscle so that it will grow back bigger and stronger. One rep of one movement does very little to exhaust fibers, so its nothing I would ever advise you to do anyhow. Some power athletes may want to train with super low reps and super high weight to develop sport-specific strength, but for the general fitness enthusiast that kind of training carries a high risk and has few benefits.
Secondly, any moves done with extreme amounts of weight are notorious for causing joint damage. Since we have a long-term health goal at MogulNet Health, we don't advise people to do anything that might cause an injury. It's not worth squatting 400 pounds today if it means you won't be able to walk tomorrow.
If someone asks you how much you can bench, just do what I do and say, "I never max out."
